Elderflowers
Elder is one of the most versatile and effective of the herbal health aids. Both the flowers and the berries may be scalded in a hot drink and used to promote perspiration, which is useful in aborting a cold, or in respiratory problems and fever. I usually combine several tablespoons of elderflowers and a pinch of yarrow with well over half peppermint leaves. Each herb has a special function in overcoming a negative health situation.
Hemorrhoids For relief of hemorrhoids try combining the flowers of elder and honeysuckle. Pour boiling water or hot milk over the flowers, and steep them for fifteen minutes. Strain. Add additional milk or boiling water, and plunge a folded cloth into the liquid and apply the cloth piping hot to the area of pain. The green berries or leaves can also be used in an ointment for this same problem. Apply the ointment while hot.
A jelly made of the berries will cure constipation in children. The root, however, is a strong purgative, and should only be used by very knowledgeable herbalists.
